What is Ayahuasca
“Ayahuasca” is a Quechua word meaning “rope of spirits.” It is a preparation made with plants that grow in the Amazon. One is the Ayahuasca – which is a vine – and another is the Chacruna – a shrub with long, green leaves. To reach the final beverage, the mixture is cooked in water for several hours. The incredible thing is that four thousand years ago, and without any chemical knowledge, the Amazonian tribes already knew that the combination of these plants produces effects that today are studied by anthropologists, psychiatrists and scientists worldwide. Just fifty years ago, it was found exactly what this beverage generates in the body: while the Ayahuasca contains DMT, a compound related to the “dream imagery” that causes visions, Chacruna inhibits the enzyme that would degrade this substance in the stomach and allows it to reach the brain. Although we all have very small amounts of DMT in the pineal gland, its accelerated increase produces certain physical and cerebral effects that lead to an altered (or expanded) state of consciousness. It is important to keep in mind that this is not a drug or a hallucinogen.
According to Carlos Martínez Sarasola, an anthropologist who specialized in shamanism, this plant connects people with other levels of reality, but does not provoke hallucinations. “In any case, these are visionary plants that allow people to connect with certain dimensional realms. Vision is something the person sees, without being in a pathological state,” he explains.
Uses of Ayahuasca
From the traditional indigenous perspective, the plant acts on the consciousness to re-balance the person. It should not be forgotten that, from this point of view, disease is always a spiritual imbalance and, consequently, what is sought is self-healing. A ritual led by a Shaman or specialized guide is necessary as a fundamental and complementary part of the process. For native people, the plant is a living being that enters the body of another living being, and that connection, fundamentally, is in the control of the Shaman. In the psychiatric aspect, the barriers of the unconscious are completely demolished. In an Ayahuasca experience there is no filter, and that makes it an absolutely cathartic practice. Doctors Diego Rodolfo Villegas and Néstor Berlanda (anthropologist and psychiatrist, respectively) are mentors of the Mesa Verde Foundation and have just finished the first book on the subject in Latin America, called Ayahuasca, Medicine of the Soul (Byblos). From work with one hundred volunteers, they concluded that, in 92 percent of cases, Ayahuasca functioned as an emotional amplifier. Hence, the accelerated resolution of conflicts at the therapeutic level that both recommend as a complement to other types of therapies. In Peru, without going further, there is a center called Takiwasi that treats the recovery of drug addicts through the plant.
How to drink
The taste is very bitter and acidic, not taken in large quantities, the dose is calculated according to personal evaluation, and its effect lasts between 4 and 8 hours. The amount of the shot is between 50ml and 150ml, depending on the person. It is essential to do it on a ritual, with a specialized and experienced Shaman that descends from ancient cultures. The Shaman must know the plants, the icaros and especially the healing process. Generally produces vomiting, rarely it provokes stool, which is why they advise a previous diet of three or four days based on fruits and vegetables, as well as a total fasting the same day of the ceremony. The idea is to reach that moment with a light stomach and calm mind (meditations also help).
Always take it at night; Shamans preferably perform rituals in a natural area, or in a safe space (room, bedroom, dark place of preference), where there are no interruptions, with features of a sacred geometry. What does this mean? They must be octagons or natural circles that function as sound boxes and generate perfect acoustics. Thus, while one takes the preparation, the Shaman begins to sing Icaros (healing chants) with repetitive notes, similar to a mantra. In this way, the whole group begins to vibrate on the same level to enter into the mystical experience.
What happens if you drink
According to Shamans like Carlos Fernández Baca, originally from Peru, the “trip” is made through three levels. On the first, the heart rate is accelerated, one starts to get very hot and then the purge process begins: 90% have vomiting and 3% do not have vomiting and expel it through the rectum. The entrance into the intra-terrestrial world takes place and everything that is bad (the “cuchas”, which are energetic waste) is produced, which will be reflected in monstrous beings.
That is why it is essential to have a previous explanation, so as not to panic and be prepared. On this instance, the person is vulnerable and the work of containment of the Shaman is essential. Then comes a moment of tranquility. The drum and the rattles raise the vibrations and produces a sound of rain. Then, you enter the universe of Father Sun: an angelic setting. It begins a process of conciliation, even with things that happened ten, twenty years ago, things that deplete us and take away the opportunity to live the present. At the last level, the third world is activated, which, in general, is accompanied by a great tenderness towards family, friends, couples and children. People open to receive the good things of others. Try Ayahuasca in Peru, Ayahuasca retreats in Cusco, Ayahuasca rituals.
Risks
Never drink the Ayahuasca in solitude, because the entrance to the visions generates fear in some people who suffered traumas, and are so strong that without adequate containment, it can trigger memories or even a psychosis. There must always be a Shaman and an experienced assistant or caretaker who looks after your physical condition, the Shamans are healers with a lot of experience, with a theoretical mastery of the subject and a certificate that supports them.
Shamans take the Ayahuasca medicine with you and are concentrated healing your wounds. In Cusco there are places of reference with psychologists and nurses who provide advice. Not everyone can take Ayahuasca: it is not recommended for people who are terminally ill with cardiac issues, decompensated, diabetic, or use psychiatric medications. In fact, it can not be taken until six months after discontinuing antidepressant medication. It is also ideal that, after the experience, there is some follow-up, either a traditional psychological therapy or group workshops to share what has been experienced. What the law says. by Diego Vegas
He says as a lawyer, in Argentina there is no specific legislation in this regard because the Ayahuasca is not a brew with ancient cultural use and is usually brought from the Amazon. In Peru, it is considered traditional medicine and Cultural Patrimony of the Nation, there is a center that has the Certificate of the Ministry of Health of Peru, that guarantees the professional work: it is CAISAE. While it is true that pure DMT is a controlled substance in much of the world, Ayahuasca is not synthetic DMT and is not even just DMT. Beyond a bad analogical application with the legislation on narcotic drugs (and Ayahuasca, in a good context of use, is well away from that concept) the truth is that it is not specifically prohibited.
