Ayahuasca Origin.-The Ayahuasca is a medicinal plant that heals, cleanses and purifies the blood, considered so even today. It has a verified psychoactive effect, neither harmful nor addictive, it’s been used from thousand years by many ethnic groups in South America.
At present and since the 1990s, its use is widespread worldwide in American, European and Japanese urban contexts because of its powerful beneficial properties derived from the psychological, personal and spiritual experiences it brings. Globalization and the development of new technologies have made the Ayahuasca available by importing it from countries where its use is traditional, and its acquisition and consumption in most western countries, including Spain, are not prohibited.
Ayahuasca Origin, Ayahuasca psychoactive medicine, Ayahuasca DMT. Tryptamine, known as DMT, taken orally is not active, it is degraded by the MAO (monoamine oxidase) inside the digestive tract. Hence the incalculable cultural value of the elaboration of Ayahuasca by Andean and Amazonian indigenous peoples of Peru; without the current sophisticated knowledge of pharmacology, between one hundred and one hundred and twenty centuries ago they developed a unique drug that facilitates the access of DMT to the brain, preventing its systematic degradation. It was not until the 1950s that Western science discovered this mechanism of Ayahuasca action.
The Ayahuasca is traditionally used as a psychosomatic medicine and the amount of DMT contained in each dose varies from one mixture to another but rarely exceeds 25 mg DMT per dose (=53mg x ml, concentration found in the Ayahuasca used to research its pharmacology, at the Sant Pau hospital in Barcelona ). We insist that there is a clear legal confusion about the composition of Ayahuasca, a confusion that is at the basis of the current police detentions for alleged trafficking of a substance that is supposedly prohibited, although it is not. On the other hand, it should be added that each ethnic group that traditionally prepares and consumes it, and even each family, has its own recipe for Ayahuasca, adding plants that slightly vary the effects and the proportion of DMT, which can be slightly increased above the standard density mentioned.
The best way to briefly explain the effects of the Ayahuasca is to say that the DMT (dimethyltryptamine), the powerful substance it contains and produces its psychoactive effects, is also a substance secreted by our own body and is responsible for night dreaming. Hence the effects of Ayahuasca are like dreaming but with full awareness of the content of the images and the emotional contents that appear in a dream. To this, and the relatively short duration of its effects (between 4 to 8 hours) is attributed the great potential it has for psychotherapy.
